I’m not sure we can safely say any mammalian species is completely off the hook. Every time I note that an official says an equine or canine flu outbreak is not a risk to humans I grimace a bit. Influenza statements always need qualifiers! Like “not a known risk” or “to date”. Then the isolates should be typed and placed in phylogenetic databases with as much metadata as is available to be ethically shared.
Risk or spillover is only a few reassortments and crucial mutations away. And such events don’t follow preferred communications talking points!
